1893 Death Of David Handelsman (Russian)

Translation by Asia David Gluzman:"It happened in Michow on 15 October 1893, at 5:00 PM. Moshko Handelsman, merchant, 50 years old, living in the village Rudno, near Michow. There were two witnesses: Lazor Malts, tailor, 43 years old, living in Michow; Gershko Figenbaum, 33 years old, living in Michow. They announced that today at 8 АM, died David Handelsman, widower, 75 years old, living in village Rudno, survived by son Binish and daughter Ester Handelsman. This act was read to the present persons and then signed."

Moshe Handelsman is not mentioned as one of the surviving children; maybe Moshe was David's nephew. He also reported the death of Esther in 1899. Note the mention of a son named Binish.

1888 Death Of Perla Handelsman (Russian)

Translation by Asia David Gluzman: "It happened in Michow on 10 February 1888, at 3:00 AM. David Handelsman, merchant,70 years old, living in the village Rudno, near Michow and Berka Rubinshtain, merchant, 47 years old, living in Michow; They announed that yesterday at 4 PM, died Perla Handelsman, 66 years old, living in Michow, daughter of Leybus and Dvora Kava. She left a widower David Handelsman. This act was read to the present persons and then signed."

Esther Handelsman had a daughter named Dvora born in Rudno in 1868; apparently named after Esther's maternal grandmother.

1836 Marriage of Temma Haneft & David Gutman (Polish)

At the bottom of the document are the signatures of the fathers of the groom and bride - Beryl Gutman and Moszek Haneft - who were 3rd great grandfathers of mine.

I wonder if Temma had any siblings, and if there are living descendants of them. For that matter I wonder if she and David had any other children. They were married for 19 years and Yankel is the only one on record.

Translation by Tomasz Nowak:

All this took place in the Town of Koninskowola on the twenty-fifth day of February in the year of one thousand eight hundred and thirty-six at the hour of ten before noon. Appeared personally Orthodox Jew Abraham Taytelbaum, the local Rabbi, accompanied by Orthodox Jew Dawid Gutman, the youth who had already turned twenty-two years of age, living off his parents, native of the Town of Kock, the begotten son of a legally married couple, the Gutmans, i.e. Beryl and Yenta the daughter of Maier*, the bakers, both of them alive and residing in the Town of Kock, as well as Temma Haneft the daughter of Moszek, the maiden who had already turned nineteen years of age, living off her father, residing in the Town of Koninskowola, the begotten daughter of a legally married couple, the Hanefts, i.e. Moszek the son of Zelman**, still alive, residing in Koninskowola and making a living as a day-labourer, and Menucha the daughter of Herszek***, not alive anymore, and declared in the presence of Beryl Gutman the father of Dawid and Moszek Haneft the son of Zelman the father of Temma as well as in the presence of witnesses, i.e. Orthodox Jews Abraham Madrowski, the szkolnik fifty-nine years of age and Hersel Finkielszteyn, the trader fifty-eight years of age, both of them residing here in Koninskowola that the religious marriage had been entered into before him that day by Dawid Gutman and Temma Haneft the daughter of Moszek following triple proclamation of banns in the towns of Kock and Koninskowola, i.e. on the thirtieth day of January, the sixth and the seventeenth day of February of the current year, and the verbal consent to marriage granted by Beryl Gutman the father of Dawid and Moszek Haneft the son of Zelman, both of them present here, and no impediments to marriage had occurred, whereunto the newly-weds declared they had not signed any premarital agreement. The above certificate was read aloud to the appeared and subsequently signed by the Rabbi, the fathers of the newly-weds and the witnesses.

NOTES:

*Dawid’s mother is being referred to as literally “Jeta z Maierowiczów Gutman” where “z Maierowiczów” is probably her patronymic i.e. denotes her father’s given name was “Maier” which we do not know though; it could well be that the above expression indicates that her maiden surname was Maierowicz

**Temma’s father is being referred to as “Moszek Zelmanowicza Haneft” where “Zelmanowicz” indicates his father’s given name was probably “Zelman”

***Temma’s mother is being referred to as “Menucha z Herszkowiczów” meaning her father’s given name was probaby “Herszel”

Birth Of Esther Handelsman, Rudno, 1844

Esther Shaindel Handelsman was Jenny Goodman's mother. This is her birth record from Michow in 1844. It mentions Rudno, which is a village in the town (gmina) of Michow. I cannot see "Ester" but I do see "Szandla" on line 10. On line 12 is the signature of Esther's father Dawid Handelsman.

Translation by Brian Kaczynski

It happened in the city of Michów on the 22nd of July, 1844 at 10am. Dawid Handelsbaum, of the Jewish faith, resident of the village of Rudno and working as a pacht (?), age 27, appeared before me in the presence of Jewish witnesses Leybuś Brzenbaum (or Bozenbaum) -- [Dozorcy Burniznego is some kind of profession, I'm not sure what), age 64, and Berech Goldsztain, a dzbelnich (again, another old vocation I can't translate), age 65 and showed us a female child born in the village of Rudno on the 14th of July of the present year at 12 midnight to his wife Perla of the house of Leybus (it's her maiden name, not "patronymic" which would seem to refer to her father's first name -- we do not use a patronymic in Polish, it is only used in Russian), age 24, to whom was given the name Szandla (I do not see the word "Ester" here anywhere) Apt ten (I couldn't translate this). This was read back to all parties present and was signed by the father as well as the witnesses.

Deaths Of Esther Shaindel Handelsman's Parents

There are records of the death of Perla Handelsman in 1888 and David Handelsman in 1893, both in Michow. These might have been Esther's parents, or grandchildren of her parents. These are in Fond 1761 of the Lublin Archives - "Perla Handelsman" in Akt 4 and "Dawid Gandelsman" in Akt 38. Availability only PSA. Microfilm 742876 only goes until 1855 at LDS The 1899 death record of Esther Shaindel gave her parents' names as David and Perla nee Kave, so if these records are of Esther's parents, they will reveal the given name of her grandfather and the given and maiden names of her grandmother.

Gutman Family

Isaac and Malka Gutman were my 4th great grandparents. No records of them, apart from being mentioned as the parents of Wolf Gutman (1789-1844) and Baruch Gutman (1793-1846). First record of the Gutman family is from 1830 in Kock (Kotsk), when Wolf's infant daughter Fayga died. Wolf was a tavern keeper and Baruch a laborer.

Wolf died in Kock in 1844, Baruch in 1846, Wolf's wife Frieda in 1855, Baruch's son David in 1872, and David's first wife Tamar in 1855. No indication of where any of them were born. Wolf and Frieda had a daughter, Shaindel Goldstein, who married in 1838 and had sons Abraham (1840) and Wolf (1851). A son, Baruch, is the only survivor mentioned in the record of Frieda's death in 1855. Shaindel might have died before then, or might have moved away from Kock.

The only record of Baruch is the 1846 record of his death. There is a record of his son David's marriage to Tamar Hanft in Konskowola in 1836, and of the birth of David and Tamar's son Yankiel (Jenny's father) in Kock in 1844. David is described as a teacher.

Yankiel married Esther Shaindel Handelsman. No record of this. Records of the births of Dvora in Michow in 1872 and of Yenta in Michow in 1872, also the marriages in Michow of Yenta (1892), Leah (1896), and Malka (1901). There is also a record of the death of Esther Shaindel in Michow in 1899. There is also a record of the birth of Leah in Kock in 1875. No records of Charna (Jenny) or Noah. No one alive ever heard of Dvora, Leah, or Malka. My mother's given name, on her birth certificate, was Dvora, so possibly she was named after her aunt.

David Gutman remarried after the death of his first wife and at least one child of that marriage, Ruchla Bielaniec, born 1859, reached adulthood and married in Kock in 1877. Wolf Gutman had several children but only one, Shaindel Ruchla Goldstein, born 1820, is known to have reached adulthood and married in Kock in 1838. At least one of Shaindel's son, Abraham Goldstein, born 1840, reached adulthood and married in Kock. There are other Gutman records from Kock but for most there is no evidence of blood relationship.

So the extended Gutman family was in Kock from 1830-1877. With so many there for that long it is likely that many of the descendants of Isaac and Malka were there until World War II. It is also likely that many emigrated.

So Jenny Goodman's parents were Yankiel Gutman (1844-?) and Esther Shaindel Gutman (?-1899), nee Handelsman.

Yankiel's parents were David Gutman (1813-1872) and Tamar Hanft (1814-1855). David's parents were Baruch (1793-1846) and Yenta Gutman (?-?). Baruch's parents were Isaac (?-?) and Malka (?-?).

Esther Shaindel's parents are noted on her death certificate as David Handelsman and Perla Handelsman, nee Kave. Her death was reported by her brother Moshe, 56, who also resided in Michow.

Interesting that Esther Shaindel's mother was named Perla. I was always under the impression that my aunt Pearl was named after Jenny's mother but perhaps she was actually named after Jenny's grandmother.
